DESCRIPTION
This is one of only around 150 identified Davis Portraits. Many are elaborate with double sitters and abundant New Hampshire painted furniture. Those things are not affordable and never have been.

Davis also made less elaborate single figure pieces with less furniture and smaller three medallion floor cloths. There is an excellent comp in AARFAC (acc# 35.300.1). (see last photo). This female portrait was exhibited and published as “The Frugal Housewife.” (v., Rumford 1981., American Folk Portraits, fig 52). She could almost be the wife of the one we possess (aside from slight variation of floor cloth et al).

CONDITION
Paper conservation at upper and lower right corner; also conservation of small tear top of sheet. The image itself is original and excellent.
