DESCRIPTION
Beautiful box is made more interesting by the 1814 newspaper lining that features a political ad for Caleb Strong's successful run for governor during the War of 1812. Strong was an notable Federalist figure in Massachusetts politics from before the Revolutionary War through the War of 1812. His ad uses the metaphor of a masted war ship to document Strong's opposition to the federal government usurping state and individual rights in its prosecution of the war of 1812. Strong was a staunch opponent of the view that the Massachusetts state militias could be forced to serve under regular army command.
