DESCRIPTION
Lots of interesting things about this rug. An inscription (I cant read) and a date which only makes sense from the back side of the rug. It seems they used the Farsi alphabet to craft a Gregorian date (ie., 1903). I've never seen that before and I wonder if that might indicate the rug is Armenian. (I dunno). Another observation: is it really a Kazak or Karabaugh... or some sort of hybrid. Note that half the rug used cotton weft (Karabaugh); the other half red dyed wool (Kazak). What does this mean? Again, I dont know, but its interesting. Maybe the most interesting thing is how beautiful it is w/ all sorts of mystical iconography, great color, and rare large size.

CONDITION
There are several worn areas w/ exposed foundation, mostly on the near end and mostly attributable to brown oxidation. W/ careful examination I also found a few areas of old re-piling and a few areas of foundation touchup. This is a "warts and all" assessment and you have to put your nose on the rug to find any of this stuff. (est quod est) The photos tell the story.
