Large labeled Hannah Davis Wallpaper Bandbox circa 1840s

$0.00

SIZE
13 1/2 x 19 x 15 1/4” tall

DESCRIPTION
Similar in character to Shelburne‘s “Pineapple” (no. 88 pp., 6); But this one is more floral with complex dendritic foliage. There are several later 1840s references on the interior newspaper. this particular label does not match any shown by Carlisle from the Shelburne collection. The script is pretty consistent with other labels though it’s border is relatively wider and more complex.

This box has a splashy florid decoration which is accentuated by the white ground. Relatively large, tall, and sturdy (via wood foundation) makes it useful as a base for a stack. Ex personal collection and acquired from a prominent St Louis estate collection.

CONDITION
Note deteriorated wood edge on one side of lid as well a substantial oval area of abrasion of the paper on the box wall below.
