DESCRIPTION

Honora Sneyd was an esteemed 18th century writer and educator; a protege of the poet and scholar Anna Seward. as well as esteemed figure among the English intelligentsia. She was briefly engaged to Major John Andre— (brief because he was hung during the Revolutionary war as a co-conspirator of Benedict Arnold). She eventually married politician/writer/inventor Richard Edgeworth. That was shortlived as she died at age 28. Edgeworth went on to have 4 wives (one of which was Honora’s sister) and fathered 22 children.

I scoured the internet and the only other example of the John Hodges Benwell rendering of this beloved British heroine/celebrity is in the British Museum (1940,1109.17) , Their example was cut down to an oval. This one is fully original.

Incidentally, the artist Bartolozzi is an esteemed 18th century engraver known for “stippled etching” technique.
