Blowsy Angel Artist Geburts-Taufschein for Catherine Zigler 1808

$0.00

SIZE
15 1/4 x 18” (frame); 13 1/4 x 16 (sight)

DESCRIPTION
This artist was active in Southeast PA 1780-1811 in and around Northampton County. Philadelphia Free library has 9 examples all of which are remarkably consistent in terms of layout and motifs. PFL also possesses an interesting German wood block (shown herein) which might have been the source for the entire inventory of the Blowsy angel artist’s entire repertoire. The identity of this artist remains unknown. However, all bets are that he was a first generation immigrant and school teacher. An interesting variant was the motif used in the top center panel: most are floral fronds; but he also employed disselfink(s) and swan as seen with this opulent and colorful example.

CONDITION
Most have center folds. Central water stain is evident but does not obscure the inscription (if you happen to be proficient at translating archaic vernacular German. See Photos.
