Unique Large Early Whale Oil Student Lamp c. 1840

$0.00

SIZE
Plinth and base is 22 1/4 inches tall; arm is 9 1/2 inches; glass font is 9 1/2 inches

DESCRIPTION
We searched every reference on lighting devices for any sort of comp and found nothing even remotely similar. I’m calling it a “student” lamp for lack of a better term. It has a blown glass font. The arm is tinware with ornate decorative casting with hanging loop with original elaborate wrought chains and brass tweezer pickwick. The elegantly turned wood plinth screws into the turned wood base which has a heavy plaster weighted brass flange bottom. Modern electrification atop the wick hole with a chandelier socket that was wired in a way that didn’t damage the reservoir (in case someone wanted to repurpose it back to a whale oil light). The glass font has a hinged bracket and it is removable from the reservoir presumably for refilling.

Whatever you call it— its a large and bombastic example of an early whale oil lighting device that probably never achieved abundant manufacture or widespread use.

CONDITION
Grungy and appears to have been used a lot. Wood chip on the plinth. otherwise, excellent and mostly original condition. See Photos.
