Repousse Brass (IHS) Alms Dish 17th/18th cent

$0.00

SIZE
8” diameter

DESCRIPTION
Early repousse brasswork circa 17th century if not older. Probably Nuremburg. Alms ie., church collection plate. The “IHS” inscription is a post medieval period Christogram. Three letters of the Greek alphabet (iota, eta, sigma) were derived from the first three letters in the Greek name for Jesus (ie., ΙΗΣΟΥΣ). Rare and interesting object not to be confused with abundant Victorian Period brassworks.
